Rolls Royce has marked the completion of a decade-long $1 billion investment program to modernize and expand its manufacturing, assembly, and testing operations in Indiana. The upgrade, centered on the Indianapolis campus and supported by testing facilities in West Lafayette, represents the largest U.S. investment in the company’s history.
The investment was deployed in two main phases. About $600 million went toward advanced manufacturing modernization, enhancing production capacity and efficiency. The remaining $400 million focused on expanding engine-testing capabilities, including new test cells at the Indianapolis site and a high-altitude test facility in West Lafayette.
Rolls Royce’s Indiana operations, which employ around 3,500 people, support critical U.S. defense programs such as the B-52 bomber, V-22 Osprey, MQ-25A Stingray unmanned refueler, C-130J transport plane, and the MV-22 Cheyenne attack helicopter. The new testing infrastructure allows for more efficient and larger-scale engine testing, enhancing the company’s ability to fulfill existing contracts and compete for future defense work.
With this milestone, Rolls Royce strengthens its role as a cornerstone of the American defense industrial base. The company plans to continue expanding its workforce, including hiring about 100 engineers to support ongoing development and production activities.
This investment highlights the enduring importance of advanced manufacturing capabilities in the U.S. aerospace and defense sector and reflects broader industry trends toward reinvestment and domestic capacity building.
