Performance Drone Works (PDW), a Huntsville, Alabama-based manufacturer of drone components, has entered into a conditional loan agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense’s Office of Strategic Capital (OSC) for up to $820 million. Announced in late July 2026, this agreement is designed to stimulate domestic production of key drone parts essential to national security and defense capabilities.
The conditional loan commitment is intended to finance a major expansion in manufacturing capacity in the United States, positioning PDW as a primary supplier of critical drone components such as propulsion systems, power and control units, and vision technologies. These components will serve both PDW’s own unmanned aircraft systems and other domestic drone manufacturers, addressing long-standing supply chain bottlenecks affecting the U.S. drone industrial base.
Though the loan commitment represents a significant capital infusion, it remains conditional. PDW must meet various financial, legal, technical, and regulatory requirements before the Department of Defense disburses funds. Alongside this government-backed financing, PDW plans to leverage additional private capital to achieve the scale needed to meet forecasted demand.
This investment marks one of the largest commitments by the new Office of Strategic Capital, which is tasked with accelerating the supply of defense-critical technologies through strategic loans and investments. It reflects broader government efforts to secure and expand domestic industrial capacity in emerging technology sectors deemed vital for defense readiness.
The boost to production capacity at PDW is expected to create jobs and generate economic activity in Alabama and beyond, reinforcing the manufacturing workforce that supports the defense supply chain. Moreover, by fostering a resilient domestic supply chain, the initiative aims to reduce reliance on foreign sources and increase the industrial base’s ability to rapidly respond to evolving defense needs.
As unmanned aerial systems become increasingly important in modern military operations, this infusion of capital and infrastructure underlines the strategic priority given to homegrown manufacturing capabilities. While challenges remain in scaling and executing this expansion, the conditional loan agreement signals a concerted effort by both government and industry to strengthen America’s drone production landscape.
