Construction begins on Saronic’s Port Alpha shipyard in Texas

Saronic Technologies has started construction on Port Alpha, a new $3.2 billion shipyard at the Port of Brownsville, Texas. The project will create thousands of jobs and build next-generation vessels, including U.S. Navy landing craft, with operations expected to start in 2028.

Saronic Technologies officially broke ground on its new Port Alpha shipyard in Brownsville, Texas, on September 30, 2026, marking the start of construction on what is expected to be one of the largest and most advanced shipbuilding facilities in the United States. The ambitious greenfield project represents an investment exceeding $3.2 billion and covers an initial 835-acre site with plans for potential expansion to nearly 4,400 acres.

JE Dunn and Alberici have formed a joint venture responsible for the initial phase of construction, which includes critical infrastructure work such as site grading, ground improvements, drainage systems, roads, utilities, and assembly buildings. The work underway aims to prepare Port Alpha for full operational capacity by 2028, with the first delivery of vessels targeted for 2029.

Port Alpha is designed to build a variety of vessels, including autonomous and manned ships, with a special focus on medium- and large-class vessels for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Among the earliest production contracts are Landing Craft Utility ships, which play a vital role in military logistics and amphibious operations.

The shipyard’s development is expected to create as many as 10,000 jobs over time, contributing significantly to the local and regional economy while reinforcing U.S. maritime industrial capabilities. The scale and modern focus of Port Alpha distinguish it as the first major U.S. greenfield shipyard constructed since World War II, reflecting a renewed emphasis on domestic shipbuilding amid evolving defense and commercial maritime needs.

By expanding American shipbuilding capacity and integrating advanced technologies such as autonomy, Port Alpha could support efforts to modernize the fleet and supply chain resiliency. Its strategic location at the Port of Brownsville leverages existing maritime infrastructure and access to the Gulf of Mexico, enhancing logistical advantages for both military and commercial production.

The project has drawn support from Texas state officials and federal entities, highlighting its industrial and workforce potential. As Port Alpha progresses from groundbreaking to full operation, it symbolizes a significant development in U.S. manufacturing and defense industrial base revival.
