Micron to Invest $10 Billion in New Memory Research Lab in Boise, Idaho

Micron announced a $10 billion investment over the next decade to establish Micron Research Labs, a new memory and AI research facility in Boise, Idaho. This hub will focus on advancing memory technologies and semiconductor innovation, enhancing U.S. research capabilities.

Micron Technology has unveiled plans to invest $10 billion over the next ten years to build a dedicated memory and artificial intelligence (AI) research lab, known as Micron Research Labs, based in Boise, Idaho. The new facility, which is expected to break ground in 2027, will serve as a flagship innovation campus focused on advancing memory technologies, compute architectures, packaging, and emerging semiconductor manufacturing methods.

This investment marks Micron’s first U.S.-based dedicated memory research hub, a move that underscores the company’s commitment to innovation in core areas critical to the semiconductor and technology sectors. The Boise lab aims to host hundreds of researchers and foster collaboration among academia, government, startups, and industry players to develop long-term technology solutions.

Micron’s $10 billion commitment to the research lab is part of a broader strategy to expand its domestic manufacturing capacity and research footprint. Separately, the company is investing more than $250 billion in U.S. manufacturing and R&D projects, including chip fabrication facilities in Idaho that are expected to generate over 17,000 local jobs. These developments reflect a wider industry trend to strengthen U.S. semiconductor supply chains and production capabilities, aligned with federal initiatives like the CHIPS Act.

The new Micron Research Labs will support projects that explore memory innovations essential for AI workloads, high-bandwidth memory, and advanced computing systems. Such technologies are increasingly crucial as AI and data-intensive applications drive demand for faster, more efficient memory and processing solutions.

Locating the lab in Boise, already home to a significant Micron presence, further solidifies the region’s role as a hub for semiconductor research and manufacturing. This long-term investment signals confidence in the local workforce and infrastructure while enhancing the United States’ competitive stance in semiconductor technology development.
