LG Energy Solutions announced on August 18, 2026, the commencement of production at its new battery manufacturing plant located in Lansing, Michigan. The expansive 226-acre facility is designed to produce large-format batteries intended for both electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems (ESS). At full production capacity, the Lansing plant is expected to generate more than 35 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery cells annually.
The new facility reflects LG Energy Solutions’ strong commitment to expanding its domestic manufacturing footprint in the United States. Currently, the plant employs about 900 workers with plans to increase its workforce to approximately 1,700 employees as operations scale. This expansion aims to meet growing demand for advanced battery solutions amid the rapidly evolving EV market and the parallel need for grid-scale energy storage.
Located distinct from LG’s earlier Michigan plant in Holland, which was recently expanded to produce lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries primarily for energy storage, the Lansing factory focuses on large-format cells used in both vehicle and stationary applications. This strategic investment marks an important step in securing domestic battery production capacity essential to broader American supply chains supporting clean transportation and energy infrastructure.
The Lansing plant was originally developed as a joint venture with General Motors but transitioned fully under LG Energy Solutions ownership following GM’s stake sale in late 2024. LG Energy Solutions has also secured a significant $4.3 billion agreement to supply battery cells for Tesla’s expanding grid storage business from this facility.
By establishing and scaling battery production in Michigan, LG Energy Solutions contributes to strengthening the U.S. industrial base for advanced energy storage and electric transportation technologies. The facility offers local employment opportunities and supports the development of regional supply chains.
