AMG Critical Materials Opens New Chrome Plant in New Castle, Pennsylvania

AMG Critical Materials has inaugurated a new $15 million chrome metal production facility in New Castle, Pennsylvania, becoming the sole domestic producer of chrome metal in the United States with an annual capacity of 6,500 tons.

AMG Critical Materials officially opened its new chrome metal production facility in New Castle, Pennsylvania on June 17, 2026, marking a significant milestone in domestic manufacturing. This $15 million investment establishes AMG as the sole producer of chrome metal in the United States, filling a gap that has existed since the last U.S. chrome plant closed in 2006.

Located adjacent to AMG’s existing titanium facility in New Castle, the new plant uses an aluminothermic (thermit) production process, a specialized metallurgical method designed to produce high-purity chrome metal. The facility has an expected annual production capacity of up to 6,500 tons, positioning AMG to supply critical domestic demand for chrome, a material classified by the U.S. government as a critical mineral due to its importance in industrial alloys and manufacturing.

Until now, the U.S. has been reliant on imports for chrome metal, which is essential in industries including aerospace, automotive, and defense. The reopening of domestic production marks a strategic step toward strengthening supply chains and reducing dependency on foreign sources for this key industrial material.

AMG’s new production facility aligns with broader national goals to enhance critical material supply chains and to support American manufacturers with reliable domestic inputs. With operations fully underway in early 2026, AMG aims to meet increasing demand driven by aerospace production expansions and other industrial sectors requiring high-quality chrome metal.

The plant enhances the industrial profile of New Castle, Pennsylvania, sustaining skilled manufacturing jobs and supporting the broader supply ecosystem. For American manufacturing and critical materials sectors, AMG’s new chrome facility represents a renewed domestic capacity in a strategically important metal.
