Novelis Inc. has restarted the hot mill at its Oswego, New York aluminum rolling plant, marking an important step nearly nine months after fires forced a shutdown of key operations. The restart, announced in early June 2026, restores a vital domestic source of aluminum sheet that supports major U.S. automakers, including Ford, General Motors, Stellantis (Jeep and Ram), Lucid, and other manufacturers with U.S. production lines.
The Oswego facility’s outage had created significant supply disruptions across the automotive sector, leading to production challenges and workforce adjustments downstream. Automakers were compelled to rely heavily on inventory, alternate suppliers, and even redeploy employees to adjust production plans and reduce bottlenecks. The restart of the hot mill signals progress toward stabilizing these supply chains.
Beyond automotive supply, the plant serves additional markets such as beverage packaging, where demand had also accumulated during the plant’s downtime. Novelis emphasized that while the hot mill is back online, the facility will undergo a ramp-up period before resuming full-scale output.
